LSU right-handed pitcher Paul Skins and outfielder Dylan Crews, both 21, were selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals, respectively, with the first and second overall picks in the 2023 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday morning.

Skins was a standout in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) this year, going 12-2 with a 1.69 ERA. His 209 strikeouts led NCAA Division I in that category. Cruz, the No. 2 pick, batted .426 with 18 home runs, a 1.280 on-base percentage (OPS), 70 RBIs and 100 runs scored in 71 games in NCAA play this year.

This is the first time in draft history that players from the same university have been selected first and second overall. Previously, New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, who attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and Trevor Bauer, who was banned from the big leagues for sexual assault, were the first and third overall picks in the 2011 draft.
